Zócalo is the huge central square in the historic center of Acapulco and one of the largest in the world. It is the central point in the city and the place where the tourists come first. The square is officially called Plaza de la Constitución, while Zócalo is the name locals gave it. This expression means plinth or the base of the column where was meant to be build a monument of independence. The monument was never built, and the base has long been demolished, but the locals still call their square zócalo.
